We want to remind you that we will be closed next Thursday (30th) in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The new statutory holiday provides an opportunity for people to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools.
Back in June, the federal government supported giving the holiday to all federal employees and workers in federally regulated workplaces.
It comes in the wake of the discovery of the horrors that occurred at residential schools across Canada, where Indigenous students would be stripped of their culture, and in many cases, subjected to abuse.
More than 38,000 of the children sent to residential schools suffered terrible physical abuse, according to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report.
Over the course of more than 100 years, some 150,000 Indigenous children were ripped from their families and forced to attend church-run residential schools.
More than 4,000 are believed to have died.
September 30th is a day to acknowledge the inter-generational pain and suffering caused by residential schools.
There will be events held across a number of Canadian provinces and people are encouraged to attend an event in their community, read the Truth and Reconciliation report, or take a few moments of reflection in memory of those who died.
