Today is officially known as Pluto Demoted Day, a day to commemorate when the former 9th planet of our solar system was reclassified as a ‘dwarf planet’ and no longer made the cut alongside the likes Uranaus, Neptune, etc.
But the nostalgia for the icy planet’s former grandeur has not been forgotten, with many online petitions gathering thousands of signatures to reinstate Pluto to planet status—these petitions have so far fallen on deaf ears.
A little history: Pluto (Roman god of the underworld) was named by 11-year-old Venetia Burney of England in 1930. Originally designated a planet, but after the discovery of smaller worlds in the same area and that Pluto was not the dominant object in its orbit around the sun, it needed to be reclassified in 2006 due to its lack of size, which is only about 2,253 kms wide!
How do you feel about Pluto? Should it retake its place among the solar system’s elite?
