Buenos días! Happy Cinco De Mayo!
Though it can be a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage, Cinco de Mayo is more accurately a holiday of celebration for Mexico’s military for their victory over French forces in 1862 during the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.
Unfortunately, Cinco de Mayo celebrations outside of Mexico have leaned towards offensive cultural appropriation. In the spirit of celebrating respectfully, ditch the infamous foolishness, and instead embrace/learn the history and culture of Mexico this Cinco de Mayo.
In Peubla, the city which the battle took place, it is an official day of rest with parades and lots of food!
