The 56th edition of the Super Bowl gets underway on Sunday afternoon, when the Los Angeles Rams take on the Cincinnati Bengals, in what will be the first time these teams have met in a championship.
For anyone who isn’t overly familiar with the NFL’s biggest day, the Super Bowl pits the NFC champions (Rams) up against the AFC champions (Bengals) for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
If you’re planning a day on the sofa, in front of the television, here’s what you need to know:
The Stadium, The Day, The Kickoff
Super Bowl LVI will be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 13, 2022, with kickoff at 6:30pm ET and 3:30pm PT.
Super Bowl Veterans Or Newbies?
The Rams are chasing their second Super Bowl title and their first as a Los Angeles-based team in their fifth appearance. They last won in 1999 as the St. Louis Rams, and last appeared in the 2018 decider.
The Bengals on the other hand are hoping to land their first ever title in their third appearance. Their last involvement on Super Bowl Sunday was way back in 1988.
McVay v Taylor – The Battle Of The Coaches
The head coach of the Rams is Sean McVay and at the time he was hired, McVay was the youngest head coach in modern NFL history. He has been L.A.’s head coach for five seasons, and he is still the youngest head coach in the league at 36 years old.
One of McVay’s former assistants is Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. He served as a wide receivers coach and then quarterbacks coach under McVay in LA before he was named as the successor to long-time Bengals coach Marvin Lewis.
Super Bowl Sunday Is A Marathon, Not A Sprint
The average Super Bowl broadcast over the past 20 years or so has been about three-and-a-half hours, and that includes a halftime show which generally lasts 20 to 30 minutes.
“And The Home Of The Brave” – US National Anthem
Country singer Mickey Guyton will perform the “The Star-Spangled Banner”, making her the first black female country singer to perform the national anthem at the game.
43 Grammys Between The Five Half Time Headliners
The headliners of this year’s halftime show are a hip-hop fan’s dream, with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lemar all taking to the stage.
Take a look at these five facts about the Super Bowl:
