How To Trick Or Treat Safely This Halloween

Halloween is this Sunday and children around the world are planning their costumes and routes for the most candy possible.

The holiday itself came from ancient festivals and religious rituals, and is considered the scariest time of the year by some.

Away from the masks, costumes and fireworks, Halloween can be scary for many people for completely different reasons.

Unfortunately, October 31st comes around every year with a lot of risks, so here are a few safety tips:

Costume Safety

  • All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant
  • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags
  • Opt for non-toxic Halloween makeup over masks, which can obscure vision
  • Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation

Going Door-to-Door

  • Stay on the front step. Kids should never enter homes when they’re trick or treating
  • Follow the rules of the road and only cross the street at established crosswalks
  • If a child has allergies or food sensitivities, read the labels before handing over the candy
  • Choose your route wisely by knocking on doors in well-lit locations

Tips for Motorists

  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
  • At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing
  • Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween

Covid-19

  • Don’t give out candy if you feel under the weather, even if symptoms are minor
  • Instead of ringing a doorbell, yell the classic line “trick or treat”
  • Set up a table so you’re not getting too close to trick-or-treaters
  • Before you dig in, wash your hands and disinfect candy packages

Have a safe and sensible Halloween!
