Today, September 15th marks the holiest Jewish holiday of the year and is always held ten days after the start of Rosh Hashanah, which is the Jewish New Year.
Yom Kippur is day when Jewish people traditionally refrain from work and when all adults fast from sundown the night before Yom Kippur until nightfall the next day.
The Torah, which is the central and most important document of Judaism, commands all Jewish adults (apart from the elderly, the sick, and women who have just given birth) to not eat or drink.
Here is some more info about the day itself:
- It’s a day for reflecting on past mistakes, accepting repentance and praying
- People fast as it’s seen as a way to cleanse and purify the body and soul
- Many will wear all white clothing to symbolize purity
- A trumpet made from a ram’s horn called the shofar is blown to mark the end of Yom Kippur
FACT: Yom means day in Hebrew, and Kippur means to atone (Day of Atonement)
