Today marks the beginning of the 16th Paralympic Games with Team Canada sending 128 athletes to Tokyo for two weeks of competition. The team is made up of very experienced athletes with 26 of them previous medalists, and 68 of them competed in Rio 2016.
Back in 2016, the team won 29 medals – eight gold, ten silver and eleven bronze – placing 14th overall.

What do we know about this year’s Team Canada?
- The team is made up of 71 women and 57 men
- 11 Canadian provinces and territories are represented
- The team will compete in 18 different sports at the Games
- 113 coaches and support staff will travel to Japan with the team
- Team Canada has qualified for five team sports including women’s goalball, women’s sitting volleyball, wheelchair rugby, women’s wheelchair basketball and men’s wheelchair basketball
Similar to the recently-completed Tokyo Olympics, the Paralympics will be played mostly behind closed doors as a result of the pandemic.
Organizers have barred all fans from all events and they have also asked the public to stay away from the road events.
Around 11,000 athletes competed in the Olympics but there will only be about 4,400 athletes competing in the Paralympics this year as the athlete population is more vulnerable to Covid-19 and cases in the Japanese capital keep rising.
