International Friendship Day is a worldwide celebration of friendship, promoted by the United Nations, and is held every year on July 30th. It’s a day to promote friendship and a day where people are encouraged to hold community events and activities that celebrate friendship and bonding.
The idea of a day like this was first suggested in the US back in 1930 by the founder of Hallmark Cards. Joyce Clyde Hall’s idea was supported by the Greeting Card National Association but people were cautious of a dedicated day for friendship because they thought it was an attempt to create a commercialized holiday to get people to buy cards.
It wasn’t until 1958 that the idea of a worldwide celebration of friendship came about, but it took the United Nations General Assembly until 2011 to declare July 30th as International Friendship Day.
This International Friendship Day, let your friends know what they mean to you. We’re lucky to work with such a close-knit group of people here at SanMar Canada, so if you have any photos of your friends that you want to share with us, please send them to either Jenna Freschi or Sean O’Regan from the Marketing Department, post them directly to the Internal Facebook page, or you can put them straight into the Fun Folder.
