“Marine debris is trash that ends up on our shorelines and in our waterways. The majority of this debris consists of plastics that harm aquatic life and pose risks to human health. Puget Soundkeeper works to remove this debris, understand its sources, and change the behaviors that lead to its accumulation in the first place. During an average year, this project engages volunteers throughout the Puget Sound region and removes thousands of pounds of abandoned trash. Puget Soundkeeper makes it easy to conduct shoreline cleanups wherever debris is accumulated. Interested groups and individuals are supplied with cleanup instructions, equipment, and disposal options enabling diverse groups to participate throughout the region.”
Invite your friends and family! If your friends or family members are also interested in participating, please email Thea separately with the number of people in your party including yourself. It is important as we need as accurate a head count as possible in order to borrow the appropriate amount of trash grabbers, safety vests, and other equipment from Puget Soundkeeper. Once we determine our group size, date, and cleanup location, I will be in touch with Puget Soundkeeper to set up a pickup time for the supplies a few days prior to our outing.
Of course, our group will take COVID-19 safety measures by wearing masks and physical distancing, but this is a great opportunity during our current climate in that it will be held outdoors and there will not be much need for us to get too close to one another.
Please do not hesitate to ask Thea questions about the event or the Puget Soundkeeper organization. They seem to be a great group of people trying to do what they can do help keep our waterways clean and happy for our marine life friends and future generations to come.
