International Day of the Nacho

Happy International Day of the Nacho! Oh, and happy Friday!

Seems a little odd to have the International Day of the Nacho in the middle of October, but there is never a bad time for nachos!

According to the National Day Calendar, we get permission to eat nachos for the full 24 hours of the day – not bad! (Though I don’t need your permission to eat nachos, internet!)

Fun fact: The legend of the first serving of nachos comes from 1943, when, while working at the Old Victory Club in Piedras Negras, Mexico, Ignacio Anaya served some leftovers to a group of hungry people. Ignacio “sliced and fried some tortilla chips, covered them with shredded cheddar and sliced jalapenos and put the concoction in the oven for a couple of minutes.”

He named them Nachos because it is short for Ignacio!

Ignacio died in 1975 and was honoured with a bronze plaque in Piedras Negras and Oct. 21 was declared the International Day of the Nacho to celebrate Ignacio Anaya with a 3-Day Nacho Fest!

Nachos quickly became more and more popular in Texas in the 1970s and the rest is history!
